Is it possible to integrate Open Badge Factory with our LMS?

Yes, Open Badge Factory (OBF) can absolutely be integrated with a Learning Management System (LMS).

The goal is simple: to enable your learning platform to automatically issue digital badges to learners directly from your training pathways.

Why integrate OBF with an LMS?

Integrating an LMS with Open Badge Factory makes it possible to:

• issue badges at the end of a module or certification

• automate badge issuance based on learning records

• highlight and recognize learners’ acquired skills

• enrich the learning experience with official recognition

Badges can then be shared on LinkedIn, exported to a skills passport, or stored in the Open Badge Passport wallet.

What integration options are available?

There are three main ways to integrate Open Badge Factory with a third-party platform (LMS, HR system, or business tool).

1. Integration via the Open Badge Factory API

The Open Badge Factory API allows you to develop a custom integration or plugin to issue badges directly from your LMS or internal platform.

This solution is particularly suitable for:

• educational or HR platform providers

• organizations with an in-house technical team

• specific or proprietary environments

Prerequisites

• An Open Badge Factory account with a Pro service level

• Generate an OAuth2 key via:

  Admin Tools > API

2. Integration via the LTI protocol (Learning Tools Interoperability)

OBF can also be integrated through the LTI protocol, a standard developed by the 1EdTech Consortium to ensure interoperability between learning tools.

With LTI 1.3, Open Badge Factory can connect to several compatible LMS platforms, including:

• Canvas LMS

• Blackboard

• Brightspace

The LTI integration provides access to OBF features directly within the LMS, without requiring specific development.

3. Integration via existing plugins
