Other Roles in the Open Badge Ecosystem

Reviewer

A reviewer is a user who reviews badge applications. The reviewer can be an Open Badge Factory service user (admin, creator, or issuer), or a person who has no Open Badge Factory account. Peer assessment is also done by reviewers.

Recipient / Badge Earner

A recipient is a person who earns a badge. The recipient does not have an account in the Open Badge Factory environment, but receives the badge via e-mail. From a technical point of view, the only piece of information the issuer needs to issue a badge, is the recipient’s e-mail address.

In addition to the term “recipient”, also the term “badge earner” is used in the user interface and the instruction material. They mean basically the same thing, but the term “recipient” highlights the issuing process, whereas the term “badge earner” highlights the point of view of earning the badge.

Consumer

A consumer is a person who views the badge which is earned and shared by the recipient. The recipient can share his/her badge, for example, in social media or via an ePortfolio.
